Opioids topic of CMU talk

Two addiction counselors and a behavioral health expert will join U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo., today at Colorado Mesa University in a discussion about opioid and heroin abuse.

The discussion is the second on opioid addictions that Tipton has sponsored in Grand Junction and one of several across the 3rd Congressional District.

Opioids are narcotic painkillers that act on opioid receptors in the body and are frequently addictive.

Dr. Bob Sammons, a Grand Junction psychiatrist specializing in behavioral medicine, and the two addiction counselors, John Flanagan, now the director of the Mesa County Workforce Center, and Bob Lang, director of Diversity, Advocacy, and Health at CMU, will discuss ways to prevent opioid and heroin abuse among high school and college students.

The discussion will be 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the University Center at CMU and it is open to the public.
