Orchard Mesa stabbing fatal

Police investigate a homicide on Orchard Mesa.

A 27-year-old Florida man was stabbed early Sunday morning, then went knocking on doors in an Orchard Mesa neighborhood in an attempt to get help before dying on the front yard of a residence, officials said.

Nicholas Allen Potts, of North Miami, died shortly after 4 a.m. on the front yard of 1254 Santa Clara Ave., about a block away from where he was reportedly stabbed on Christopher Court, according to the Grand Junction Police Department.

Lee McDonald, 25, of Grand Junction was taken in for questioning at the scene and later was arrested Sunday on suspicion of first-degree murder, the Police Department said.

His booking photo was not released.

The Police Department said Potts was stabbed on Christopher Court, then ran through the neighborhood — Christopher Court intersects with Santa Clara Avenue — knocking on doors for help as McDonald followed him.

Potts died outside 1254 Santa Clara Ave. near the end of the block where it intersects with Pinon Street, the Police Department said.

The Mesa County Coroner ruled Potts’ death a homicide from multiple stab wounds.

Most of the 1200 block of Santa Clara Avenue was taped off for the investigation early Sunday.
