Pa. man accused of sex assault
A 58-year-old Pennsylvania man who formerly lived in Mesa County appeared before a judge Tuesday, accused of sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse for alleged sexual acts that occurred over numerous years and perhaps hundreds of times.
According to an arrest affidavit for Wayne Stewart, the alleged victim, now 20, said Stewart inappropriately touched her when she “was around the age of 6.” She told investigators that the number of times the touching happened “could have been hundreds.”
Many of the assaults alleged by the victim occurred at Stewart’s former address in the 2700 block of Monroe Street. Stewart currently lives in Montrose, Pennsylvania. He was extradited to Colorado following his arrest earlier this month.
Other alleged assaults happened outside of Colorado, including on another occasion when the victim was in sixth grade. In that instance, the victim said Stewart plied her with alcohol.
“Wayne was giving (the victim) wine before the incident occurred. (The victim) described drinking glass after glass of wine and she remembered being buzzed,” Stewart’s arrest affidavit notes.
Law enforcement said the victim confronted Stewart in October 2015, and he allegedly told her “nothing would come of the investigation and that instead of going to the law, God has helped him,” according to his arrest affidavit.
Stewart also allegedly “admitted he did a lot of bad things to (the victim)” and to another person not connected to the assaults.
Prosecutors sought a high cash-only bond for Stewart on Tuesday, citing his lack of current ties to the community and the “obviously serious allegations.” If convicted on a charge of sex assault on a child in a position of trust, and a related sex assault charge, Stewart could face a lifetime of incarceration or supervision.
A public defender on Tuesday cited Stewart’s low risk assessment score and distant criminal history in seeking a low bond.
Mesa County Court Judge Bruce Raaum sided with prosecutors, and issued Stewart a $50,000 cash-only bond. His next court date is set for Aug. 22.
