Palisade hires Zuniga as new softball coach

Palisade High School has its softball position filed.

Monday, the Bulldogs promoted from within and hired Nicole Zuniga as the new head softball coach.

Zuniga was an assistant with the Bulldogs last season under coach Tony Kirby, who was forced to resign earlier this summer because of work conflicts.

“I’ve been working with these girls all summer and it feels great to get this opportunity,” Zuniga said. “I’m really grateful to coach at Palisade.”

Palisade also has Deke DeCrow joining Zuniga as an assistant.

“We are very lucky to have these two qualified individuals working with our kids,” Palisade High School Athletic Director Mike Krueger said in a press release.

Zuniga played softball at Mesa State College finishing up her career as a utility player in 2008. This is Zuniga’s first head coaching position.

Palisade finished 14-8 last season and was one game short of the state tournament, losing to Mesa Ridge 14-4 in the district playoffs.

The Bulldogs lost a lot of seniors from last season, but return Emily Crow and Mariah Gellermann as upperclassmen this season.

“We’ve been (Western Slope League) champs the past two years and we want to keep that going,” Zuniga said. “And we want to keep working to get back to state.”
