Garfield County Sheriff’s Department authorities released a photo Friday of a man they consider a person of interest in connection with sightings of naked men on local trails, and they hope to learn his name and whereabouts.

“He is somebody that we would definitely like to talk to, to find out more details,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Tanny McGinnis.

The photo depicts a sunglass-wearing young man with a full head of hair pulled back in a short ponytail. He is shirtless in the photo, which is cropped at his shoulders.

McGinnis said she can’t elaborate on where the man’s photo came from because the case is still under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Department has been receiving reports of men-in-the-buff on local trails since 2008, including a number this spring.

Most have been in the Carbondale area, and a few in past years were in Glenwood Canyon. Some of the recent reports have involved simple streakers, but at least one report was of a man masturbating.

Authorities believe more than one party is involved, but also that one man may be involved in multiple incidents. The descriptions have been of white men, in some cases reportedly with a runner’s or athletic build, and with red or brown hair.

The sightings were the subject of local media reports early this month. McGinnis said authorities have been getting many leads and tips. Some tips date back years, “but the pieces are starting to come together” in terms of trying to determine which incidents might be linked, she said.

“We just got this piece (the photo) that moves us in a different direction in some of those cases. It gives us the opportunity to talk to somebody and find out if we can clear him or not,” McGinnis said.

Anyone with information on the man in the photo is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 970-945-0453, or Garfield County Crime Stoppers at 970-945-0101.

Tips also may be submitted at http://www.crimestoppers.com. Crime Stoppers tips may be submitted anonymously and lead to up to a $1,000 reward if an arrest is made.
