Pinwheel event to prevent child abuse

Soren Ashcraft and Gary Terrell place pinwheels in front of The Daily Sentinel.

The national “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign will kick off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Canyon View Park.

Starting with the planting of a large pinwheel garden, the event will include 30 games and activities for children ages one to eight years old and their families. Children may “pick” a pinwheel to keep for free from the garden while supplies last.

April has been declared the Month of the Young Child in Mesa County and is also Child Abuse Prevention Month. In honor of that, this event is sponsored by the Mesa District Group, How Are The Children and the Mesa County Partnership for Children and Families, in conjunction with Prevent Child Abuse Colorado.

“The pinwheels represent the promise of a happy childhood,” explained Nancy Ketchum, executive director of CASA, the court-appointed school advocates for children in the Grand Valley.

CASA is just one of many organizations in the Grand Valley that sponsors the annual pinwheel event. Those sponsors include the Partnership for Children and Families, Mesa County School District 51, The Parenting Place, The Western Slope Center for Children, Hilltop, Mesa Developmental Services, Mesa District Group, Western Equality, Wakefield Property Management Services and Dr. John Poovey.

Another large pinwheel garden has been planted at the Department of Human Services satellite office in Fruita. Smaller gardens will be planted throughout the month at The Daily Sentinel; Shelledy, Pomona and Rocky Mountain elementary schools; and at many of the sponsors’ offices.

The campaign hopes to raise community awareness and distribute information to the public to help prevent child abuse before it happens, Ketchum said.
