Plenty of firsts for GJ Rockies in season opener

OGDEN, Utah — There’s little that equipment managers won’t do to retrieve history.

Grand Junction Rockies’ clubhouse manager Dennis Publow tracked down the first home run hit in Grand Junction history, but there was one thing in his way: a barbed-wire fence surrounding a warehouse beyond the right-field wall, with posted “No Trespassing” signs.

He knew he couldn’t scale the fence, and he couldn’t get to the ball. But he’s a resourceful guy. He paid a kid $5 to slide under the fence, which Publow pulled up enough to let the kid slip through and retrieve the ball hit by Miguel De Leon in the fourth inning of the Rockies’ 13-7 loss to Ogden.

The ball will be returned to Grand Junction, where it will be displayed in the Rockies’ offices at Suplizio Field.
