Pocket knife allegedly used in Clifton stabbing

Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jessica Joy Gaither, 26, of 452 Mesa Lakes St. in Clifton, in the early hours on Sunday on suspicion of stabbing her husband in the back.

Deputies said neighbors of Gaither and her husband had been hosting the couple at their home. The group had been drinking and listening to music, according to the arrest affidavit. Her husband had gotten up to go to the bathroom and when he came out, Gaither allegedly snuck up behind him and stabbed him in the back, according to the affidavit.

The victim reportedly told deputies Gaither was always threatening him by saying, ‘I’m gonna kill you, I’m gonna stab you,’ according to the arrest affidavit.

The victim suffered a 3-centimeter long laceration on the lower back, to the right of his spine, the affidavit said. The weapon was a folding pocket knife, deputies reported.

The doctor attending to the victim reported there was no serious damage and the laceration didn’t meet the criteria for serious bodily injury.

The arrest affidavit said the victim was visibly and admittedly intoxicated and difficult to interview.

Gaither is being held on a $7,500 bond on suspicion of assault.
