Suspect in fatal beating returned to GJ
A man suspected of beating another man to death in downtown Grand Junction is now sitting in the Mesa County Jail.
Sahr Benjamin Mbawa, 27, 576 W. Greenfield Circle, was booked into the jail Friday afternoon on suspicion of second-degree murder, according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Department records. He is being held on $300,000 bond.
Mbawa surrendered to Denver police on Nov. 6 and had been held in the Denver City Jail until Friday. It was unclear when he will make his first court appearance in Mesa County.
Mbawa is accused of killing 32-year-old Richard Martinez, who died of injuries from a fight early Nov. 3 near the intersection of Main and Sixth streets.
According to the Grand Junction Police Department:
Joshua Stuart Powers, 22, 2853 North Ave., was issued a summons Friday on suspicion he stole items from Mesa Mall. He was booked into the Mesa County Jail on an outstanding warrant.
A thief entered four vehicles parked in a driveway in the 700 block of Victor Drive on Thursday and stole less than $1,000 in items from them.
A thief broke into several vehicles on Longhorn Street and stole less than $1,000 in items from them early Friday morning.
A thief stole less than $500 in items from a display case of a business in the 2700 block of U.S. Highway 50 on Friday.
Two people are suspected of causing more than $1,000 in damage to property in the 2000 block of North 12th Street on Thursday.
According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department:
Kelii Christofur Murphy, 21, 151 Second St., Clifton, was arrested at Seventh Street and Orchard Avenue on Friday on a warrant alleging possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Rie Pruitt, 35, address unknown, was issued a summons Friday on suspicion of serving alcohol to two underage people at Kuniko’s, 1133 Patterson Road.
A man living in the 400 block of Ridge Lane reported Friday that someone stole $1,400 in items from his unlocked vehicle.
A man living in the 400 block of Fruitwood Court reported Friday that someone stole $250 in items from his unlocked vehicle.
A man living in the 400 block of Ridge Lane reported Friday that someone stole a miniature stuffed giraffe valued at $7 from his unlocked vehicle.
A woman driving on Interstate 70 reported Friday that she saw a white sheet covered in blood on the north side of the interstate between Grand Junction and Clifton. Deputies found the sheet and said it tested presumptive negative for human blood. The sheet was booked into evidence.
