Poll: Republican leads Colorado Senate race

Republican Ken Buck leads the two Democrats in the race for the U.S. Senate by a larger margin than does his GOP opponent, Jane Norton, a poll says.

A Rasmussen poll released Tuesday said Buck, the Weld County district attorney, leads the incumbent Democrat, Michael Bennet, 48 percent to 39 percent. Buck also is leading Bennet’s Democrat opponent, former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, by 47 percent to 42 percent.

Buck held a 5 percentage-point lead over Bennet and a 6 percentage-point lead over Romanoff a month ago, according to the Rasmussen poll.

Norton, who had led both Democrats in previous polling, has seen her advantage over them hold steady or grow slightly. The Grand Junction native and former lieutenant governor leads Bennet 47 percent to 40 percent, and Romanoff 44 percent to 42 percent.

Rasmussen polled 500 likely voters in Colorado on Thursday. It has a margin of error of plus- or minus-4.5 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.

The poll result was a double dose of confidence for Buck, whose campaign crowed that it had more cash on hand, $664,000, than Norton’s $600,000.

“Jane Norton is taking a page out of Obama’s establishment playbook, spending money hand over fist but sagging in the polls,” Buck’s campaign consultant, Walt Klein, said.

Norton campaign manager Josh Penry said Norton has withstood attacks from Buck’s allies and Democrats and is still standing, “so the fact that she’s still beating Romanoff and Bennet speaks for itself. The lady can take a punch.”

Buck, Penry said, “does more touchdown dances than Terrell Owens. We’ll let him crow and get back to him on election night.”
