Portion of North Avenue collapses

Grand Junction city crews are trying to determine what caused a portion of North Avenue at 28 Road to collapse this afternoon.

City public works spokeswoman Kristin Winn said an 18-inch wide, 2-foot deep hole has developed in the inside westbound lane of North Avenue at the intersection with 28 Road. City workers will locate utility lines in the roadway before digging in the area to find out the cause of the collapse.

Winn said the collapse was reported before this afternoon’s brief but strong thunderstorm that flooded many city streets and intersections.

Westbound traffic on North Avenue at 28 Road has been reduced to one lane, and drives should expect some traffic delays in that area for the rest of the afternoon.

Winn said city crews also are responding to calls about storm sewer backups and street flooding from the downpour.
