Postal unit at 12th Street location will close on May 31
The owner of two U.S. Postal Service contract postal units that are slated to close April 18 has decided to close his third Grand Junction location May 31.
Tony Martinez has decided to close the 2139 N. 12th St. location, in addition to the ones at Mesa Mall and 759 Horizon Drive. The P.O. boxes at the 12th Street location will close on April 18.
Martinez said he worked on a volume contract, and it would be difficult to keep numbers up after the P.O. boxes were removed.
“I just couldn’t see where I could make ends meet,” he said, adding, “I’m trying to leave with a good tone.”
Martinez said his main focus was to take care of his customers, especially his business customers, who had their box numbers printed on stationery, letterhead and checks.
That “really created a problem for all my customers,” he said. “That hurts the most.”
The Postal Service announced in February it is seeking replacement contract postal units for the ones slated to close April 18. So far replacements have not been named, and Martinez has not been informed of any. When Martinez’s sites close, there no longer will be any post offices in the northern part of the city.
“That’s a lot of volume that’s gonna have to be absorbed by the main post office,” Martinez said.
