Pot shop won’t open near private Grand Junction school

Gregg Davis is looking for a new spot for MedTech Modern Care and Wellness Systems after deciding not to open at 721 N. 12th St.

Davis, who owns Herbal Paradise at 605 Grand Ave., planned to open MedTech in late February. The business would have offered numerous patient-care services, including chiropractic services, acupuncture and medical marijuana.

Davis decided to shop around for a new location after hearing concerns from administrators and parents of students at nearby Lutheran Church and School of Messiah, 840 N. 11th St.

The school’s director and principal, Neal Kaspar, was pleased to hear of the move, but he told Grand Junction City Council members during public comment at a recent council meeting he wants the city to create guidelines for how far a medical marijuana center can be from a school.

“(The move) does not remove the need for some type of regulation,” Kaspar said.

Davis said regardless of his store’s proximity to a school, he would not sell to anyone that does not have a medical marijuana card. But he has no desire to locate near a school in the future.

“It has been a pleasure to stay in close professional communications with the administrator of the Lutheran Church and School of Messiah,” he said in a statement. “After careful evaluation, his concerns and the fact that we are a professional establishment, we have decided to relocate to an environment which will have no impact on schools. We not only want to work with the community, but also be a part of the community.”

Davis said he hasn’t had much luck finding a new home for MedTech, but he would like to open in a location similar to Herbal Paradise’s, which is free-standing.

“It’s almost like it was meant to be. We may come across a location that’s better,” he said.
