Poudre scores late TDs to top Fruita Monument in football
A couple of late touchdowns Saturday cost the Fruita Monument High School football team as the Wildcats lost 31-7 to Poudre in Fort Collins.
The Wildcats played the Impalas competitively, trailing only 10-0 at halftime.
“They were pretty balanced,” Fruita Monument coach Bill Moore said. “They had a good second half and did a little bit of everything.”
The Wildcats’ lone touchdown came in the third quarter when Casey Rogers scored on a 10-yard run. The touchdown cut the margin to 17-7.
“We were still in the game at that point,” Rogers said. “We fell apart towards the end of the game.”
Fruita Monument got another strong game from sophomore running back Devin Dance, who went for over 157 yards on the ground on 22 carries.
The Wildcats (2-7) learn their postseason fate today.
“I don’t know where we’ll be for next week,” Moore said. “We’ll probably play someone with a similar record.”
Palisade made it to the cross-bracket semifinals of the District 8 tournament at Montrose but fell 3-0 to Mullen. The Bulldogs lost 25-19, 25-13, 25-13.
“Mullen is tough,” Palisade coach Wendy MacAskill said. “We played hard and played tough, but they didn’t give us anything. We had to earn everything.”
The Bulldogs made it that far by splitting their pool play matches. Palisade defeated Pueblo East 3-0 and fell to host Montrose 3-0.
Against Pueblo East, Palisade was led by Danette Whittington, who had 29 assists, 21 digs and three aces.
Mullen ended up winning the tournament, defeating Montrose 3-0 in the championship match.
Montrose, by virtue of its second-place finish, also qualified for their weekend’s regional playoffs.
Grand Junction saw its season come to an end with a 5-2 first-round Class 5A playoff loss to Cherry Creek.
