Powderhorn employees on furlough; practice is common in ski industry

All employees at the Powderhorn Ski Resort have gone on unpaid furlough until May 16.

Resort spokeswoman Sarah Allen said Friday that the furloughs are a repeat of what the resort did last year.

“This is the second year in a row that we’ve had this type of mud-season break, and it’s common in the ski industry,” said Allen, who was on a skiing trip in Wyoming. “This is the second summer that we’re not having any summer operations. Our ownership wanted to go the direction of winter recreation and putting all of our resources and effort into that. We’re working long-term to widen that platform.”

The resort’s ski season ended April 3.

Allen said when workers return next month, they will do their normal summer maintenance to get the resort ready for the next season.
