Powderhorn Ski Resort preps for Thursday opening

Powderhorn Ski Resort announced Tuesday it tentatively will open for the 2010–11 ski season at 9 a.m. Thursday.

“As of right now we’re prepared to open Thursday morning,” said Sarah Allen, communications director for Powderhorn Ski Resort. “The only variable, of course, is the weather.”

Allen said temperatures have been hovering around freezing at the resort, and the wind chill has enabled the resort to keep snow on the ground. About 5 inches of snow had fallen in the past 24 hours, she said Tuesday afternoon.

“Anything other than snow could jeopardize our snowpack,” said Allen, sharing the ski industry’s penchant of avoiding the “R” word, rain, whenever possible. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed the storm brings more snow.”

A final decision will be made this afternoon, Allen said, and that decision will be available on the Powderhorn website, http://www.powderhorn.com.

Allen said the announcement also will supply information on which trails and lifts are open as well as operating hours and ticket information.
