Montrose wins Gunnison Invite
Six Montrose High School golfers finished in the top 10, led by a member of its junior varsity team, as the Indians won the six-team Gunnison Invitational boys golf tournament Wednesday.
Montrose totaled 240 strokes, three better than Delta, which placed two golfers in the top three. The Montrose JV team finished third, led by Tyrus Lopez, who tied for third place individually with a 78.
Jacob Hebbel paced the Indians’ varsity team with a 79 and was followed by four teammates as they claimed fifth through ninth individually.
Palisade’s Kyler Smith was the meet medalist, touring the par-71 Dos Rios Golf Club course in 73 strokes.
Fruita Monument claimed every match except No. 1 singles as it defeated Central 6-1 in boys tennis Wednesday.
The Wildcats’ Nick Rutan made Central’s Jesi Nordstrom earn the victory at No. 1, taking him to a tie-breaker in each set.
Fruita Monument coach Clint Davis praised his No. 3 singles, Gabe Treider, for his 6-1, 6-4 win over Lael Nordstrom. Davis said Treider entered his match with a plan, executed it, and remained focused when Lael Nordstrom stepped up his game in the second set.
