Public safety plan to be aired

A proposal for paying for a new public safety center will go to a vote before Grand Junction City Council members during a public hearing Monday night.

Members of the public are invited to speak at the hearing.

Council members will review and vote on a proposal to issue certificates of participation not to exceed $36.3 million. The funds would go to a new police station and a 911 dispatch center and possibly a new fire station to replace station No. 1. The city shops off West Avenue would be renovated for the new fire station.

Some $500,000 a year from 911 fees would go toward repayment of costs for the new 911 center.

Voters in 2008 rejected two ballot questions that would have increased taxes or denied taxpayers a refund in order to build a new $98 million public safety building.

City Council members made improving public safety infrastructure their No. 1 priority. A proposal to create a stand-alone police station and emergency dispatch center was last discussed by council members during an Aug. 2 workshop. At that time, they requested city staff work out the details about funding for a facility.

Also Monday, the council will discuss and vote on issuing $7.8 million in certificates of participation to improve amenities at Suplizio Field. Donations and other grant dollars are expected to cover other costs of the project.
