Pumpkins headed for a splattering demise

Pumpkins aren’t the most graceful of flying objects, but they do make a satisfying sound when they hit the ground. Splat!

And there will be plenty of pumpkin splattering at two upcoming pumpkin chucking events:

The third annual Pumpkin Chunkin’ hosted by Grand Junction Parks and Recreation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, at the Lower Valley Pumpkin Patch at 23 and L roads.

Have fun launching pumpkins provided by the pumpkin patch or take your own. Each launch costs $1.

There also will be a number of homemade launchers catapulting pumpkins. (The deadline to register a launcher has passed.)

Call the Parks and Recreation department at 254-3866 or go to http://www.gjcity.org for information.

The Pumpkin Chuckin’ Festival near Moab, Utah, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.

The fifth annual event benefits the Youth Garden Project, http://www.youthgardenproject.org, and features plenty of quirky fun along with flying pumpkins. Costumed teams launch the gourds using trebuchets, catapults, cannons and slingshots.

In addition to the pumpkin chucking, there will be bluegrass bands playing, pie eating and other food contests, a petting zoo, magic show, arts and crafts vendors and costumed wiener dog races.

The festival can be found at the Old Airport Runway, 8 miles south of Moab. Go to http://www.youthgardenproject.org or call 435-259-2326 for information.
