Questions linger in Montrose man’s death

Authorities said Wednesday it may take some time to determine what caused the death of a Montrose man whose body was found in a Delta County irrigation canal this week.

Delta County officials confirmed the body found Monday is that of 52-year-old Abe Martinez, who was last seen at his brother’s home in Olathe in August.

Deputy Coroner Mike Worthington said an autopsy performed Tuesday did not reveal the cause and manner of Martinez’s death. He said the coroner’s office will run more tests and should know more about what happened to Martinez in a week to 10 days.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a better idea of what we’re looking at,” Worthington said.

Delta County Undersheriff Mark Taylor said authorities are treating the case as a homicide until they develop more information.

“Any death like that we treat as if there was foul play,” he said.
