Questions linger with dead body

HAZMAT searches for hazardous materials at the scene of a body found in a car.

Authorities had little explanation Wednesday night as to the connection between hazardous materials and a body found inside a vehicle on Prospector’s Point, overlooking the Fifth Street bridge and the Colorado River.

Members of the Grand Junction Police Department, Grand Junction Fire Department and a hazardous-materials crew were called to the scene at 6:30 and spent most of Wednesday evening investigating who was in the vehicle and what hazardous materials were in or around the car.

Foul play was not suspected, Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said.

As of 8:45 p.m., authorities still had not gotten inside the car to remove the body and determine who it was.

The crime scene on Prospector’s Point is at the end of High Street on private property.

Porras did not say what hazardous materials were on scene. She confirmed the body inside the car and the hazardous materials on scene were related.

During her update to the media at 8:45 p.m., Porras said it would be a couple of hours before investigators even got inside the car.
