Mitch Hamilton, teacher and sponsor of the R5 Bike Shop, assembles a bike in time for the holidays.

Mitch Hamilton and his students that run the R5 Bike Shop don’t need instructions to assemble a child’s bike. They already have the right wrenches, tire pumps and plenty of storage space to hide that precious gift until Christmas.

The class, which teaches bicycle maintenance at R5 High School, is offering parents the opportunity to have their child’s bike assembled and hidden until Christmas for a small fee this year.

“The money will be used to purchase new tools, replacement parts and to begin teaching more advanced bike techniques to the kids,” Hamilton said. The service learning class currently has six active members, some of whom are working toward mechanical certification.

“It’s a great way for them to get more practice,” Hamilton said.

Parents can take new bikes to the school for assembly from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 20, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 21. The bike shop is located in a large storage shed on the North side of the building.

Pick-up of bikes will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Christmas Eve.

The R5 Bike Shop also has an inventory of rebuilt bicycles that will be available for purchase on Dec. 21. Children’s bikes cost $10 and all others are $25. All proceeds benefit the bicycle maintenance program.
