Red Mountain Pass opens twice a day, starting tomorrow

Recent rockfall that closed Red Mountain Pass in Ouray County has been remediated enough by work crews so that vehicles can now again travel the steep mountain pass, at least during a few open windows starting tomorrow.

Beginning tomorrow morning, Red Mountain Pass will be open to single-lane, alternating traffic two times a day — once from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and again from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All traffic will use the southbound lane, and the northbound, or inside, lane will remain closed while a barrier and a temporary 24-foot-high rockfall fence is placed inside the highway center line, the Colorado Department of Transportation said today.

CDOT recommends SH 62, SH 145 and US 160 as alternate routes when the pass is closed.
