Repairs required on new parkway

Concrete, joint sealings needed replacement; fixes covered by warranty

Joe Mestas, a foreman with Mays Concrete, air-drills into a cut section of concrete on the Riverside Parkway, on the U.S. Highway 50 overpass. A section of the roadway was breaking and had to be cut out. Concrete will be poured into this section.

Less than two years after the opening of the $110 million Riverside Parkway, contractors are repairing cracks in the road and broken curb and gutter and have had to fix other deficiencies.

Mays Concrete is replacing sections of the parkway near West Avenue and the parkway bridge over Fifth Street, where a large crack developed and was spreading across the westbound lanes.

“There was some settlement out there that we felt was due to construction,” Trent Prall, engineering manager for the city of Grand Junction, said Thursday.

Prall said SEMA Construction, the Centennial-based general contractor hired by the city to build the seven-mile bypass, asked the city several months ago to wait on ordering the repairs to see how the road performed. But he said it was clear from regular follow-up inspections the road would have to be repaired.

In addition to replacing the concrete, Mays Concrete workers are replacing joint sealings that failed. Prall said the sealings are important because they keep water from getting into the road subgrade, the material underneath the concrete.

Prall said Mays Concrete installed most but not all of the original concrete in the parkway. He said he wasn’t sure whether SEMA Construction or Mays Concrete is footing the bill for the repairs.

In addition to concrete repairs, workers have had to pull up dead trees and fix “minor asphalt issues,” Prall said.

All of the repair work is covered by the warranty on the parkway, meaning no tax money is being spent, he said.

The work should be done in a week to 10 days, Prall said.
