Rider dies after motorcycle hits elk

A motorcyclist died Saturday night after hitting an elk on Interstate 70 in Mesa County.

Timothy Parker, 48, of Vail, was riding east near milepost 64, close to the Mesa-Garfield county line, when the motorcycle struck an elk crossing the highway, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Parker’s 2012 Harley Davidson had just passed another vehicle and was returning to the right-hand lane when it hit the elk around 6:40 p.m.

The motorcycle went off the right side of the road and struck the guardrail.

Parker was thrown from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The State Patrol said Parker was wearing eye protection, but not a helmet. Alcohol, drugs and excessive speed are not suspected contributing factors.

“The elk was not found during the ensuing investigation,” troopers said in a news release.
