Road closure lifted as wildfire dies down

Fire officials plan to lift road closures Friday related to the Water Creek Fire on the Roan Plateau north of Rifle, the Bureau of Land Management said Wednesday.

The 370-acre fire was first reported on June 19 and was started by lightning. Firefighters contained the fire within a designated perimeter while letting it clear dead and downed timber and stimulate new growth.

The fire is not expected to become active or grow, but smoke from smoldering occasionally may be visible. No one is assigned to the fire, but firefighters will continue to monitor it from the air and on-site while on patrol.

Roads reopening Friday include BLM roads 8004 (Cook Ridge), 8006 (Northwater), 8008 (Long Ridge) and 8009.
