Roadmap for fairgrounds development released

After countless meetings, numerous analyses, and lots of public input about the Mesa County Fairgrounds, a phased plan for improvements at the 90-acre property on Orchard Mesa is coming into sharper focus with the release of a draft master plan.

In short, the roadmap for future improvements includes three distinct phases, two of which area either have all or some of their funding already earmarked by the county.

The West End phase includes improvements to roads and irrigation, an upgrade to park spaces and Little League fields, and a new BMX track.

The proposed East End phase details an expansion of livestock and equestrian facilities, including a new open-air, covered arena.

The final phase, which will need a funding or partnership plan to become a reality, includes a a 5,000-seat multi-use arena and a 30,000-square-foot exposition hall.

Both the West End and East End phases have some or all of their funding earmarked in the county’s capital plan. The final phase, or proposed Central Development phase, is open-ended in terms of timing and funding.

Residents can call the fairgrounds at 255-7107, or e-mail at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to share their opinions. The Board of County Commissioners is expected to consider the new Fairgrounds Master Plan by the end of the year.
