Roads, trails closed due to heavy rains

The U.S. Forest Service closed some roads and trails Wednesday in the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests because of area flooding from heavy thunderstorms this week.

The Goodnough Road (Forest Service Road 618) is closed. Dexter Creek Road (FSR 871 and Ouray County Road 14) is closed and completely washed out in areas, Forest Service spokeswoman Lee Ann Loupe said.

Some people were stranded on the opposite banks of Dexter Creek, but Forest Service crews worked Wednesday to reach the people and re-establish access to the area, Loupe said.

The flooding and road closures in the area affect access to Horsethief Trailhead, which is expected to be inaccessible for at least two weeks.

Recreationists who frequent those area national forests are reminded that more heavy rain is forecast for the area in the days ahead. People are encouraged to avoid high elevations and creek crossings during storms.
