School project benefits entire community
For the past six weeks, students at Central High School have been cleaning out their closets, digging through their siblings toyboxes and sorting through their mother’s shoes in an effort to help those in the community in need this holiday season.
“I just have so much stuff. It’s made me look at my closet in a whole new way,” said Selina Najar, a senior and an officer in the PEACE Club. PEACE stands for “Promoting Empathy and Compassion Everywhere” and the students in the group are trying to collect clothes, toys, and personal hygiene items for anyone who may need it.
They’ve spent over 100 hours folding clothes and cleaning toys for their upcoming Holiday Heroes giveaway which takes place Tues., Dec. 20. The event is open to Central High School students at 4:30 p.m., then open to the public from 6 to 8 p.m.
“You can just come and grab whatever you need,” Najar said. She has received several calls in the past couple of weeks from people so thankful for her project. “One lady told me you have to have identification or residency to be helped by other organizations,” she said. The PEACE Club will not ask any questions or require any kind of documentation.
“The fact that people are so thankful — that alone makes it worth it,” Najar said as she and other students folded and sorted through trash bags filled with clothing donations Wednesday morning.
The students have collected so many things that they need more storage area within the school. “Some of the teachers are a little irritated they can’t get through here,” Najar said with a laugh.
Despite an overflow of clothes, Najar said they are still in need of a few items including toys, diapers, feminine hygiene products, personal hygiene products and toilet paper.
The group is especially in need of newborn and baby clothes. “A lot of people are hoping to come to get things for their kids for Christmas and we still don’t have that much stuff like that,” Najar said.
Donations can be taken to Central High School, 550 Warrior Way. For other information, call 254-6200.
