Saccomanno gives $640,000 in scholarships

As the Saccomanno Higher Education Foundation enters its 25th year of funding the dreams and degrees of local students, board members are reflecting on a few million reasons to celebrate.

The nonprofit organization has awarded nearly $15 million in scholarships to students in Mesa County and Carbon County, Utah, since it was founded in 1992 — an accomplishment that board member Gena Cooper said her grandparents, founders Geno and Ginny Saccomanno, would be proud to see.

“My grandparents considered it a privilege to help students,” Cooper said. “They knew firsthand education was a key component to making a better life for themselves and their family and contributing to their community.”

The foundation has grown exponentially since it started, from awarding 19 scholarships in 1992 to awarding 286 scholarships, totaling $639,500, in 2017.

The top schools for students who receive a Saccomanno scholarship are Colorado Mesa University, University of Utah’s College of Eastern Utah, University of Colorado and Colorado State University.

While scholarship awards have dipped the past two years, Cooper said it’s because the foundation’s board of directors is working to keep the foundation going for years to come.

“(My grandparents) wanted to share this opportunity with others and pay forward the generosity shown to them,” Cooper said. “It’s an honor to continue their legacy.”
