Sam’s Club rewards Nisley teachers

Kimberly Basham threw her hands up in celebration as members of Sam’s Club drew her name to receive a $50 gift card Friday morning at Nisley Elementary School.

The teachers at Nisley Elementary School were treated to a continental breakfast by Sam’s Club Friday morning to celebrate their work toward improved T-CAP testing scores.

Twenty of the teachers also won a $50 gift card to be used on their choice of classroom supplies.

“We understand that they often are out spending their own money for things,” said Greg Martin, membership manager for Sam’s Club.

Martin said Sam’s Club employees chose Nisley to receive this year’s $1,000 gift because of their improved T-CAP scores.

“We are just honored to be able to give especially since teachers are so unappreciated most of the time,” said Jennifer Wallis, a membership leader for Sam’s Club.

The winning teachers were very excited for the extra cash, listing items like copy paper and cartridge ink on their needs list.

“I’m going to spend it on snacks for the kids after school. By 4 o’clock, they’re usually starving,” said Jorge Alvarez, an English as a Second Language teacher who tutors children after school.

Martin said he’s working toward finding other ways the Sam’s Club employees can help give back to the community.

“We’re looking forward to doing more with the school district because we understand the importance of teachers,” he said.
