Save the Rink tries to save Glacier Arena

Supporters of the Glacier Ice Arena have created a nonprofit organization they hope will ensure ice skating doesn’t melt away in the Grand Valley.

Save the Rink Inc. was formed on Tuesday, attorney Rob Pierce said. He and several other people sit on the board of the new organization, which is “targeted toward ensuring the long-term viability of ice skating in the valley,” Pierce said.

Pierce has worked with Glacier owners Alan and Robbie Koos to find ways to reopen the Glacier, which closed Monday after four years as a result of problems with the rink’s refrigeration system.

The Koos family also is considering legal action against the Canadian company that installed the refrigeration system.

The Koos family has no position on the board of Save the Rink Inc., but Robbie Koos said Tuesday she hopes a way can be found to revive the Glacier.

Pierce, who set up the Save Grand Junction’s Ice Rink page on Facebook, said he is looking at ways that the organization’s board can offer a tax write-off to contributors. The Facebook page on Tuesday had more than 1,300 friends.

Pierce also said a Save the Rink Inc. account has been established at Alpine Bank for people to donate money for reopening the rink. Donations will be accepted at any branch in the state.

Depending on how things work out, it’s possible Save the Rink Inc. could offer retroactive tax advantages to donors, Pierce said.

Save the Rink Inc. also will work with the original organization, Ice Skating Inc., Pierce said.

A complicating factor is the for-profit status of the rink, he said.

In any case, the Koos family is optimistic about the possibility of saving the rink, Robbie Koos said.

“The community has come through before,” Koos said.

Supporters of the rink face a daunting task in that it will cost about $450,000 to get the rink reopened and operating again for a year, and it could cost as much as $800,000 to complete all needed repairs.
