School closures to be considered for 2012-13

A list of potential District 51 budget-saving measures for 2012-13 is likely to include the closure of Scenic or Broadway elementary.

The list will be presented to the district’s school board June 21 as part of a request from the board to see what items could save more money in 2012-13, when the district expects further budget cuts. The district plans to cut $13.6 million in its 2011-12 budget, which the board will adopt June 21.

The list’s introduction does not mean one of the schools will close, District 51 Executive Director of Support Services Melissa Callahan DeVita said. It is simply an informational item meant to give the board options and figures, she said. Any school closing decisions will be made in August or later and it’s possible no schools will close.

Scenic and Broadway are being pondered for potential closure before other schools because their student populations are under 250 students and, while other areas grow or remain flat, enrollment is declining at all Redlands elementary schools.
