School calendar adopted

The School District 51 Board of Education adopted the 2010-11 school year calendar Tuesday night and voted unanimously to add Rocky Mountain Elementary School to the list of institutions that will follow the traditional calendar.

Currently, Rocky Mountain Elementary starts earlier than other schools and has a two-week fall break. Following Tuesday night’s decision, Rocky Mountain Elementary will join 34 schools that already follow the district’s traditional calendar.

A recent survey of the 500-plus families served by Rocky Mountain Elementary found about one-third wanted the calendar changed, one-third liked it as is, and one-third didn’t care.

Andy Laase, District 51’s executive director of elementary schools, told school board members he supported moving the school onto the traditional calendar because it would make it easier to schedule in-service sessions for teachers district-wide.

Lesley Whitacre, assistant director of elementary schools, added it is difficult to solve overcrowding situations in schools in the Clifton and Fruitvale area because sending kids to Rocky Mountain often means they may start school nearly three weeks behind if an overcrowding situation is not detected until the start of classes at another local school.

Board members adopted the traditional calendar with the first day of school set on Aug. 23 and the last day of school scheduled for May 31. The last day of school could be moved up to May 26 or 27, depending on how much of a budget shortfall in state funding the district will face this fall, District 51 Superintendent Steve Schultz said.

The 2010-11 calendar has Thanksgiving break scheduled for Nov. 24 through Nov. 28, winter break for Dec. 18 through Jan. 3, and spring break from March 11 through March 20.
