Colorado’s best daily newspaper with a circulation under 75,000 is The Daily Sentinel, according to the Colorado Press Association.

Daily Sentinel Publisher Jay Seaton accepted the award for general excellence Saturday during the CPA’s annual banquet. The last time The Daily Sentinel received this honor from the CPA was 1988.

“I could not be more proud of this award because it’s a reflection not just of the newsroom, but of everyone in the whole operation. We’ve been pushing this boulder for some time, so there is a lot of satisfaction here,” said Seaton, who became publisher in the autumn of 2009.

“I think this award reflects perhaps more than anything since I arrived in Grand Junction the dedication of the people involved with The Daily Sentinel,” Seaton added. “(Managing Editor) Laurena Davis is front and center here, but credit spans everyone from our managers to our carriers to the folks who answer the telephones. I’m very, very proud of this one.

“I know I speak for everyone when I say we can’t wait to tee it up for next year.”

The Daily Sentinel also was the sweepstakes winner in the photo and design category for newspapers of its size in the state. Sentinel staff members took home 30 additional awards, including 10 for first place, in categories of editorial coverage, page design, advertising, photography, graphics and its website,
