Sentinel takes 15 awards for excellence

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel won 15 awards in the annual Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters awards contest, six of which were first-place honors.

The newspaper won awards for editorial writing, environmental reporting, business coverage, photography and graphic design.

It also swept three categories — the headline writing, environmental reporting and portfolio photography — among other newspapers its size, which included Colorado newspapers with circulations of between 15,000 and 30,000.

“Our business model is premised on the notion that content matters, and we think readers rely on that,” Daily Sentinel Publisher Jay Seaton said. “These awards reflect the investment we’ve made in good people and responsible journalism, so we’re really proud of our people and glad they’re getting acknowledged. This is something we hope to continue in the future, and even to enhance it.”

In the headline writing category, editorial page editor Bob Silbernagel won first, copy editor Carrie Marfitano finished second and copy editor Dave Haynes claimed third place.

In the environmental story category, reporter Dennis Webb won first, and reporter Gary Harmon took second.

Photographers Dean Humphrey and Gretel Daugherty earned first and second place, respectively, in the portfolio category.

Other Sentinel first-place winners were Silbernagel for editorial writing, graphic artist Robert Garcia for informational graphics and the Daily Sentinel staff for online breaking news.

Other third-place winners were reporter Amy Hamilton for business story, Mike Wiggins for investigative reporting, Humphrey for spot news photo and photo coverage of a continuing story, The Sentinel staff for online special package, and Wiggins and reporter Emily Anderson for public service for a story about Mesa State College’s plans to create a body farm.

Other newspapers in the same circulation division included Greeley, which led the field with 21 awards; the Boulder Daily Camera, with 19 honors; and the Fort Collins Coloradoan, with 14.
