Services Monday for late GJPD commander

To the delight of the Honor Flight passengers, guardian Greg Assenmacher makes a huge show out of shaking the last few drops of coffee out of the pot after donning an apron and lei.  At one point, Assenmacher announced, “I am NOT a stewardess—I am a FLIGHT ATTENDANT!” and the veterans and their guardians burst into laughter.

Funeral services for Grand Junction Police Department Cmdr. Greg Assenmacher are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Fellowship Church, followed by burial at Orchard Mesa Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.

A death notice published today by The Daily Sentinel said he is survived by his wife, Deletha D.; three daughters, Haley and Madison, both of Fruita, and Michaela Graber of Denver; his mother Joanne of Portage, Mich.; four brothers, Paul of Alpharetta, Ga., Dennis of Riverview, Mich., John of Schoolcraft, Mich., and Lee of Rockland, Calif.; and one sister, Karen Assenmacher of East Lansing, Mich.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Haley and Madison Assenmacher Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank; or Western Slope Center for Children, 259 Grand Ave., Grand Junction 81501.

Assenmacher, 54, a 32-year police veteran, died Tuesday night at his home after collapsing while he was exercising.
