Seven Grand Junction group homes to be remodeled

Seven group homes will become more energy efficient with a $40,000 community development block grant from the city of Grand Junction.

Wednesday night, Grand Junction City Council members approved a request by Mesa Developmental Services to use the grant amount to remodel seven of MDS’ group homes. The grant, awarded last year, was originally going to be used to help MDS complete a $508,835 project that included work on the seven group homes plus a major remodeling project at Mesa Developmental Services’ main office at 950 Grand Ave.

The office project was pushed to the back burner this fall when the need for three new group homes became apparent, said Marilee Langfitt, director of public relations and development at MDS. The new homes, which will not receive money from the $40,000 grant, are being built to house clients of the Regional Center’s nursing unit. The nursing unit is closing due to state budget cuts.

Remodeling projects at the current group homes will include installing new tankless water heaters at 181 Elm Ave., 1260 Glenwood Ave., 1825 Orchard Ave., 1444 N. 23rd St., 424 N. 22nd St., and 2802 Mesa Ave. for $22,400. The grant will also help pay $9,100 to replace a driveway and sidewalk, move electrical lines for a sump pump, replace gutters, correct drainage, and repair roof flashing and damaged concrete on a back patio at the Mesa Avenue home. The grant will also help replace single pane aluminum windows with energy-efficient windows and construct a covered roof over a back patio at 2859 Elm Circle for $8,500.

Langfitt said the remodeling could begin as soon as MDS signs a performance contract with the city.

The existing group homes aren’t the only ones that will be energy-efficient. The three new homes will be Energy Star certified, Langfitt said.

“We support any ‘green’ projects and it makes sense to have the cost savings,” she said.
