Seventeen-year-old accused of stealing ATV and car
A teenager was arrested Friday in De Beque on suspicion he took a joy ride on an all-terrain vehicle before stealing a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix.
De Beque resident Gunther Boldt was driving his backhoe to move hay bales Friday when he spotted the 17-year-old boy riding on Boldt’s 1999 Honda 300 ATV toward the main road, according to a Mesa County Sheriff’s Department report.
Boldt drove toward the boy, who drove the ATV to Boldt’s barn, then ran off toward the Interstate 70 frontage road after Boldt confronted him and called 911, according to the report.
The boy found the Pontiac Grand Prix with the keys in the ignition and decided to take it, the report said. The vehicle was valued at approximately $3,000.
The teen was contacted by the De Beque marshal while driving east on the south frontage road because the license plate on the stolen vehicle was not lit. The boy was arrested on an outstanding warrant and on suspicion of criminal attempt, auto theft and trespassing, the report said.
Deputies said the teen told them, “I wanted to ride one,” explaining why he was on the ATV, which is valued at $2,000.
