Sexually violent predator changing address in GJ

A sexually violent predator that a local judge once dubbed a “hunter of teenage girls” is changing his address, the Grand Junction Police Department announced Friday afternoon.

Thrice-convicted sex offender Carl Vincent Avery, 44, is moving to a home in the 400 block of Chipeta Avenue, the Police Department said.

As a result of his status as a “sexually violent predator,” a sex offender likely to re-offend, local police are required to notify the public of his change in address.

During a 2000 sentencing hearing, Mesa County District Court Judge David Bottger gave Avery the “hunter” label while discussing his history of luring his victims, teenage girls.

According to the Police Department, Avery has been convicted in cases relating to a 1997 sexual assault in Mesa County, a 1998 sexual assault in Mesa County and a 1999 attempted sexual assault in Garfield County.
