Sheriff: Search on for evidence in Birgfeld case
Mesa County Sheriff’s Department personnel today are searching for evidence in the nearly four-year-old disappearance of Grand Junction mother Paige Birgfeld, authorities said.
The evidence search, involving roughly a dozen Sheriff’s Department investigators, search and rescue volunteers and a representative of the Mesa County Coroner’s office, is focused on a field in the area of 23 Road and Logos Court.
The same area was originally searched in 2007, according to Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Henry Stoffel.
The effort was expected to take a full day, sheriff’s department spokesperson Heather Benjamin said.
“This is just simply part of an active and ongoing investigation,” Benjamin said, when asked if the effort was prompted by specific developments in the case.
The field which is the focus of the search is less than a mile west of the parking lot at 727 23 Road, where Birgfeld’s car was found burning the night of July 1, 2007. Birgfeld, 34, was reported missing by family June 28, 2007.
