Sheriff’s posse holiday food drive under way
Sunday morning, a shopper emerged from the Fruita City Market with a cart full of groceries, approached volunteers from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Posse in the store’s parking lot and said he wanted to donate all but one bag in the cart to the posse’s canned food drive. The simple but generous act of kindness brought a tear to posse member Bob Romig’s eye.
“I look forward to this every year,” Romig said of the canned food drive. “It warms your heart. It makes you feel like there are so many good people out there.”
The all-volunteer sheriff’s posse hosts an annual food drive during the holidays to collect non-perishable and frozen items to donate to The Salvation Army, which will dispense the items to families in need. Romig said many donors know what it’s like to need a little help.
“A lot of people who donate are a lot less fortunate than many of us,” he said.
Sheriff’s posse members will collect food in a trailer between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 16 in a rotation of local City Market parking lots. The posse’s next stop this Saturday and Sunday is the City Market at 200 Rood Ave. The drive will continue Dec. 1 and 2 at the Clifton City Market at 569 32 Road, then move to the City Market at 630 24 Road Dec. 8 and 9. The drive will wrap up Dec. 15 and 16 at the Orchard Mesa City Market, 2770 U.S. Highway 50.
