UPDATE: Clifton teen’s death investigated

A teenage boy was killed this afternoon in a Clifton neighborhood after suffering a gunshot wound, according to neighbors.

Authorities were called out to a home at 619 Susan St. around 3:30 p.m. on a report of a male who was shot in the chest. Susan Street is one block east of 32 Road on the north side of Patterson Road.

Mesa County Sheriff’s spokesman Heather Benjamin confirmed little else, saying only they have an active death investigation.

A sheriff’s deputy at the scene was overheard telling witnesses that the victim was a 16-year-old boy. A friend of the slain boy explained they were trying to disassemble a .22-caliber bullet, when the round apparently discharged, according to a neighbor.
