Clifton teen’s death ruled homicide
The Mesa County Coroner’s Office this afternoon said the death of a Clifton teenager on Wednesday was homicide.
Troy D. Martinez, 16, died of a gunshot wound outside 619 Susan St., the coroner’s office said.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department said in a release investigators “will be in no rush” to reach conclusions about what happened. No arrests have been made.
“We offer our sympathy to the family of Troy and to his fellow students at Central High School,” Sheriff Stan Hilkey was quoted in the release. “This is a great tragedy on many levels for our community.”
A neighbor who lives at 622 Susan Street said Wednesday he rushed to the scene of the incident after hearing a teenage boy repeatedly yelling for “Troy.” The same boy who had been yelling also claimed he and his friend had been trying to take apart a .22-caliber round, when it discharged, according to Richard Chambers at 622 Susan St.
Chambers said he didn’t see any guns or other ammunition in the area, but said he had heard a suspected gunshot roughly a half hour, to an hour-and-a-half, before the incident.
