Singer takes opportunity offered in Internet venue

Most people sing in the shower, and that’s where their voices should stay.

Others, such as area resident Heather Davis, have real talent but little opportunity to be heard.

Davis, 32, found the solution on the Internet and is a finalist in the third season of the Idol Search.

The contest emulates the hit Fox Television show American Idol. Contestants film amateur video auditions of themselves then post it to the Web using

After the top 10 are selected, contestants are assigned a particular genre of song each week. Fans have 24 hours to vote for their favorite contestant as many times as they can.

Davis earned a spot in the top 10 by winning a previous mini-Idol Search contest on She is in the top six and feels she has a pretty good shot at winning “all the small town famousness on the Internet,” Davis said.

“I’m just doing this because I don’t knit,” she joked.

Using her laptop’s Webcam, Davis has filmed herself singing in her bathroom and her garage.

Contestants aren’t allowed to use microphones, so she seeks places with ample acoustics.

In the past few months, Davis has learned that she can’t rely only on her beautiful mezza soprano voice. The video production plays a large part, because Internet users are seeking entertainment, after all.

“It’s more than just a voice because someone has to see you,” Davis said, “You have to make it interesting. That’s really important.”

She has been teaching herself the art of video production including location, plot and special effects.

“I started fixing my hair and my makeup, making a whole package, then people really started paying attention and voting for me.”

This week her song is “Stormy Weather,” an old jazz tune first sung by Ethel Waters in 1933 and later by Lena Horne.

Voting the Idol Search begins at 5 p.m. today and ends at 5 p.m.  Monday. The elimination round takes place live at 5 p.m. Tuesday at on the Chillin’ with Cree Show.
