Skeletal remains found north of Delta

A couple hiking in north Delta County on Tuesday came across what were believed to be human skeletal remains, Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee said.

The remains were reported about 1 p.m. on a hillside in Wells Gulch, which is about 17 miles north of Delta and close to the Mesa County line, McKee said. The area is east of U.S. Highway 50.

Deputies from Delta and Mesa counties, assisted by representatives of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, were at the scene through the afternoon and early evening.

“There’s a good chance we’re going to be back tomorrow,” McKee said.

McKee said Mesa County authorities were notified as a courtesy because of the find’s proximity to the county line. Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Matt Lewis said crime-scene technicians were dispatched to the area to assist the investigation at Delta County’s request.

Delta County has no unresolved missing persons cases, McKee said.
