Smashburger closes its 12th Street store in Grand Junction

Sometime this winter near the holidays, a new food operation will open where the 12th Street Smashburger was closed on Sunday.

“We have another concept that will work well,” franchise owner Jim Cagle said on Monday. “Another brand will go in there.”

The Smashburger franchise at 1840 N. 12th St. was the second Grand Valley Smashburger opened by Cagle and a partner, which called for as many as five stores in the Grand Valley.

Closing the store was “just a business decision” that reflected business conditions in the valley, Cagle said.

“We just oversaturated the market too much,” he said.

The closure leaves the chain with Grand Valley locations at 115 W. Grand Ave. in Grand Junction and in Clifton at 3235 Interstate 70 Business Loop.

The store was closed Sunday and an employee meeting was scheduled there at 3 p.m.

The move will concentrate Smashburger’s business in the two remaining stores, Cagle said.
