Snow headed for western Colorado high country

A winter storm is barreling toward western Colorado, bringing snow with it that could make travel hazardous in the mountains and impede the search for a lost snowmobiler atop Grand Mesa.

A winter weather advisory is in effect tonight through 9 a.m. Sunday for areas above 8,000 feet, including Grand and Battlement mesas, the West Elk and Sawatch Mountains and the northwest San Juan Mountains, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. Winds will increase throughout the day today as the storm approaches from the northwest and snow will develop over the northern mountains this evening and spread south on Saturday.

Forecasters are calling for 4 to 8 inches of snow in the advisory area, with winds gusting to as high as 35 mph, causing areas of blowing and drifting snow.

Meanwhile, a winter storm warning is in effect for the Elkhead and Park Mountains and the Flattops in northern and north-central Colorado from 6 p.m. today until 9 a.m Sunday. Eight to 16 inches of snow could fall in those areas.

Here in the Grand Valley, there’s a 20 percent chance of snow tonight and Saturday, with little or no accumulation expected. Saturday’s forecasted high will be 29 degrees.
