Sources: Colo. Guard member killed in Afghan crash
DENVER — Two people with knowledge of the tragedy say a Colorado Army National Guard member was among the 38 people killed when a helicopter crashed in Afghanistan.
The people who confirmed the death spoke to The Associated Press Monday on condition of anonymity because the Defense Department had not yet released the information.
About 70 members of the Colorado Guard left for a one-year deployment in Afghanistan in May.
The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan says the 30 U.S. troops and eight Afghans who died in the crash were on a mission to assist forces pursuing a Taliban leader.
The coalition says an insurgent with a rocket-propelled grenade reportedly fired on the Chinook helicopter and shot it down.
It was deadliest single loss for U.S. forces in the decade-long war.
