Spending bill has money for Western Slope

The stopgap spending measure that keeps the federal government in business in the new fiscal year contains several goodies for western Colorado.

The continuing resolution includes $9 million for a new National Guard armory off D Road near the Western Colorado Veterans Cemetery and Colorado Army National Guard field maintenance shop No. 3 at 325 West Ave.

Companies in Delta, Montrose and Glenwood Springs also will benefit from the bill.

A Montrose company, Polystrand Inc., that makes materials that protect soldiers from rocket, mortar-round, improvised-explosive-device and car-bomb blasts is slated to get $16 million. The procurement is intended to protect soldiers in forward-operating bases.

Also included is a $2.4 million purchase of shelters to protect airmen from extreme temperatures in extreme terrain. Hansen Weatherport of Delta makes the shelters.

Intermap Federal Services Inc. of Glenwood Springs is included in the measure and will receive $800,000 for software that helps map restricted areas, such as Burma, Cambodia, China, Iran, Laos, Mongolia, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia and Vietnam.

Other provisions include restoration of Colorado’s wildfire budget for all 2008 costs. The state’s fire budget was raided to pay for firefighting in other parts of the country.

Other provisions set aside $1 million to help National Guard members returning from duty and $800,000 to the Colorado Center for the Blind for blinded veterans.

The Rural Policing Institute will receive $4 million to help train rural first responders.

The resolution “will greatly benefit the communities on Colorado’s Western Slope,” said Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo.

The resolution also lifts the ban on development of oil shale, allowing the Bureau of Land Management to complete regulations needed to issue commercial leases for shale.
